No argument from me. Those developments from Sun are still relatively new and are not yet proven in an Enterprise environment like J2EE and the .NET Framework.

Is the landscape changing? Absolutely, and it will continue to change. As the environments change, developers will need to adapt to them, or risk falling far behind.

There are people beginning to make the switch away from Windows. And who knows, Vista and OS X Leopard may be the last two iterations of the "Traditional" OS that we see, with the focus coming more to network-based applications and connectivity maybe the next generation OS will be a thin-client with most of it's functionality rooted on web-servers with Flash GUIs.

The important thing is to consider the environment that your workplace uses. Be in touch with the people setting the direction for the next 3-4 years so that any applications that you and your team create can be as sustainable as possible.

Keith,
You are right that about using Windows as a primary OS as of now but I think situation is begin to change. I am seeing a lot of persons interested in Mac and Linux, so why would I like to invest my money and time to develop a software for one platform only. I am developing desktop applications in .NET since three years and I am agree that developing a desktop application is easy in .NET. But recently I have started to work on a Java Swing application (because this software will run on Windows Linux) and I don't think it is too difficult. Now Netbeans is very good IDE for developing desktop application in Java. I think still there are some problems with speed and deployment in Java but as Sun is now taking care of desktop applications better than earlier (JavaFX, Lightweight Consumer JRE) in near future I think situation will improve.

TO be honest, I'm not sure how to help you. I've looked for answers on this a couple of times since your initial comment and I'm not completely sure how to help.

The only thing I can think of is to create a calendar entry with the features you want and export it to a VCS file. It may yield the answers to your queries. If I get a chance in the next few days, I'll try it and upload the file here.

Of course scenario #3 assumes that the laptops are running Windows. I used this as the example because the vast majority of large corporations use some variant of Windows as their primary client OS.

Of course if your target is different, say Linux or Mac OS X, then it's a whole new ballgame.

If cross-platform compatibility is a must, then Java is the obvious choice. But even with Java applications, or C applications, TRUE platform-independence is easier said than done... but it is at least possible.

I think the difficulties may be in that the original build was done on an Intel-based Macbook. I suspect that the binary is probably compiled only for that processor.

I'm going to have to do some investigating on how to create a universal binary. :)

Tried to install on a mere PowerPC running OS X 10.4.9. The directories
weren't there, but that was easy to fix. :)

The problem here, though, is the message -bash: "./wget: cannot execute
binary file". 'file' considers wget to be a "Mach-O executable i386".

So I assume that's a clear nono. Thanks anyway, will remember. :)

Not sure how I missed your comment from last month, Eric. To my knowledge the plugins don't _need_ to be disabled, but I'll do some additional reading on the topic and see if I can come up with an answer in the next version of the script. :)
